Talcum Powder Sourcing 2026: Three Unavoidable Questions

  • Apr 30

If you're sourcing talcum powder, you've probably already received several quotes. Some say it's "completely safe," others mention "cancer risk." After hearing so many different things, it's hard to know what to believe.

This short post gets straight to the point and answers three questions:

Can talcum powder still be used?

If so, how do you manage the risks?

What can we do for you?

1.Can it still be used? It depends on the end use.

In 2024, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified talc as Group 2A – "probably carcinogenic to humans."

That conclusion was based mainly on epidemiological studies of perineal (genital) use.

To put it in procurement terms:

If your customer is using talc to make genital baby or body powder, then yes – there is controversy, and we do not recommend it.

But if the intended use is plastics, paints, ceramics, rubber, ordinary cosmetics (face powder, pressed powder, deodorants), or food/pharmaceutical anti-caking agents – then talc remains a compliant, cost-effective raw material.

In 2025, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) proposed classifying talc as Category 1B ("presumed human carcinogen"), based on human evidence from perineal use plus animal inhalation studies. However, this proposal does not target industrial filler or ordinary cosmetic uses.

In short: as long as you avoid the "genital care" end use, talc can be sourced and used normally in major markets (including the EU) in 2026.

2. If you are going to buy, how do you avoid the pitfalls?

The real risk with talc is not talc itself – it is asbestos contamination.

Talc and asbestos are naturally occurring minerals that can be found near each other. If any step in mining, separation, or testing is not strict, asbestos can get mixed in.

When sourcing, make sure about three things:

Does each batch come with an asbestos test report (preferably from an ISO 17025 lab using TEM or PLM with a detection limit below 0.1%)?

For cosmetic grades, do they meet EU 1223/2009 or USP/NF heavy metal limits?

For export to the EU, do you have REACH-related documents and a GHS-compliant SDS?

If these three are not confirmed, customs clearance or customer audits will likely run into problems.

For every batch, we do the following:

Asbestos testing: sent to a third-party ISO 17025 lab (TEM/PLM), formal report provided

Cosmetic grades: heavy metal testing to meet international limits

Full export documentation: GHS-compliant SDS (Chinese, English, German, French, Spanish, Italian), certificate of origin, REACH pre-registration, phytosanitary certificate, etc.

Stock and delivery: Regular stock at Shanghai and Ningbo ports. For standard grades, delivery within 15 days.

4. Frequently asked questions from buyers

Q: There are so many talc powders on the market. What makes yours different?

A: On the surface, many powders look similar. The difference is in things you don't see – like batch-to-batch consistency and how transparent our test reports are. We can say that every batch is third-party tested for asbestos, and reports are available with the shipment. If you want to see the difference, you can compare our sample with another supplier's.

Q: Which industries do you mainly supply? Can your talc be used in XX field?

A: Plastics, paints, ceramics, rubber, cosmetics, food and pharmaceutical excipients – yes. But each industry has different requirements for particle size, brightness, heavy metals, and asbestos limits. Not every grade works for every application. Send us your specific specs, and we will help match the right grade for your needs.

Q: What is your price level? Can you go lower?

A: Price depends on quantity, payment terms, and whether it is a long-term partnership. Anyone can give you a low price – the hard part is making sure the product works when it arrives. If you are interested, let us know your target price and usage volume, and we will see what we can do.
